Environment Canada announced on Saturday that weather warnings for North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii have been expanded to include heavy rainfall alerts for the North Coast regions. The alerts come as a strong frontal system moves across British Columbia, bringing strong winds and intense precipitation.
“An intensifying frontal system will impact the B.C. coast today and overnight into Sunday morning,” states Environment Canada.
The southeasterly winds, expected to reach 70 to 90 km/h with gusts up to 110 km/h in exposed coastal areas, began on Saturday morning and are forecasted to ease by Sunday. Authorities cautioned residents that power interruptions, service delays, and travel challenges are possible during the event.
“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Stay away from fallen power lines,” states EC.
In addition to wind warnings, Environment Canada has issued rainfall alerts for Haida Gwaii and North Coast communities, including Kitimat, Stewart, and Terrace. Forecasts indicate that these areas may receive between 50 and 85 millimetres of rain from Saturday through late Sunday.
DriveBC urged motorists in the affected regions to use extra caution over the next few days, as heavy rainfall and strong winds could make driving conditions hazardous.
