The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed it will carry out a full depopulation of ostriches at a farm in Edgewood, British Columbia. This decision follows the Supreme Court of Canada's refusal to hear the farm owners' final appeal against the cull order.
The cull was ordered on December 31 after an avian flu outbreak was detected at Universal Ostrich Farms in the southern Interior of B.C. The CFIA stated that it has fully complied with all court rulings up to this point.
“Maybe a miracle will happen yet,” said Dave Bilinski, co-owner, while supporters held a prayer circle.
Protesters expressed their anger; one labeled the CFIA as "criminals" and mentioned plans to leave Canada, and another described the ruling as "disgusting."
The agency expects the farm owners and their supporters to respect the court's judgment and comply with the order.
Summary: The CFIA will go ahead with culling ostriches in B.C. after the Supreme Court declined to hear the farm owners’ appeal, ending legal barriers and prompting strong reactions from supporters.
