Hundreds without power in downtown Toronto for more than a day as crews work to repair damaged cable

Hundreds Still Without Power in Downtown Toronto After Cable Damage

Parts of downtown Toronto have been without electricity for over 24 hours after a damaged cable caused a widespread outage. The affected area extends from just east of Parliament Street to just west of Jarvis Street, and from Queen Street East to south of Front Street East, according to Toronto Hydro’s outage map.

Crews have been working continuously to repair the fault, which was triggered by a third-party construction incident. As of Thursday morning, Toronto Hydro stated that workers had made "significant progress" and were "nearing completion" of the repair. Despite this, the utility postponed the expected restoration time once more to 11 a.m. Thursday—about 27 hours after the blackout began.

“Crews worked through the night and made significant progress and are nearing completion in repairing the damaged cable,” Toronto Hydro said Thursday morning.

The outage began shortly after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, and nearly 600 customers remained without electricity by the next day. Crews arrived on-site soon after the initial failure, and early social media updates suggested power might return by 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, though officials noted the timing could change.

The cable fault was “caused by a third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area,” Toronto Hydro said in a 4:30 p.m. update.
