Dick Cheney, Former Vice President and Defense Secretary, Dies at 84

Dick Cheney, a hard-charging conservative and one of the most powerful vice presidents in U.S. history, has died at 84.

Cheney led the armed forces as defense chief during the Persian Gulf War under President George H.W. Bush and later advocated for the invasion of Iraq as vice president under George W. Bush.

He died Monday due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family.

Cheney was, in effect, the chief operating officer of the younger Bush’s presidency.
