GM gene-edited tomatoes to be fed to humans (but no, it's not a food safety study)

GM Gene-Edited Tomatoes to be Fed to Humans

Researchers are recruiting vitamin D-deficient subjects to trial the GM tomato, as part of the ViTaL-D Study.

A report by Claire Robinson notes that the Quadram Institute in Norwich is seeking 76 people with low vitamin D to participate in the study, where some will eat soup containing genetically engineered tomatoes.

Pat Thomas from Beyond GM said there should be "an abundance of precaution" when it comes to GM foods that people have not eaten before.

The study is not a food safety study, but rather a trial to test the effectiveness of the GM tomatoes in addressing vitamin D deficiency.

Author's summary: Gene-edited tomatoes to be tested on humans.
