Fashion Industry Challenged by Volume Growth
The fashion industry is facing challenges in achieving sustainability gains due to growth in volume sold. Despite per-tonne environmental improvements, rising production volumes have offset these gains.
The UK Textiles Pact, led by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), has launched an updated roadmap to tackle carbon emission and water reduction targets. The roadmap establishes eight new circularity indicators across four workstreams to address these challenges.
- Signatories, including major brands such as Asos, Next, and Primark, have reduced carbon emissions by 6% and water use by 9%.
- However, a 17% increase in textile volumes has resulted in a 10% rise in the Pact's total carbon footprint and a 7% increase in water use.
The updated Roadmap aims to support the sector's push to be more sustainable.
