Pollution now has a panel: what that means for chemistry

Pollution Now Has a Panel: Implications for Chemistry

Professor Tom Welton OBE FRSC examines the potential impacts of the new Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution.

In June, governments agreed to establish this panel, providing a platform dedicated to the third planetary crisis: pollution, alongside climate change and biodiversity.

The job is straightforward to state and hard to do: give decision-makers clear, independent evidence and practical options so countries can protect health and the environment while providing all the important benefits to society that come from the chemical sciences.

The Royal Society of Chemistry has long advocated for this panel, with many contributing to consultations, writing evidence, and making the case for chemistry's role in a broader conversation involving engineers, social scientists, economists, and affected communities.

Author's summary: New panel tackles pollution crisis.
