Thoughts on the Orioles' Managerial Job
A new twist has been added to the secretive world of managerial searches, with University of Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello being considered for the San Francisco Giants' managerial job.
The best hires seem to be the most unexpected, and Vitello's potential hiring is a case in point. Although he is a college baseball coach, he has gained recognition for his excellent commentary on draft nights for MLB Network.
Unlike the NFL and NBA, which have occasionally hired coaches from the college ranks, major league baseball has not typically done so. While teams may add a coach from college, hiring a manager directly from the college ranks is unprecedented.
