A large stretch of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton will be closed due to a Marine Corps live-fire event.
The event, part of the Marine Corps' 250th birthday celebration, will involve firing artillery over the I-5 Freeway, posing an "extreme life safety risk and distraction to drivers" with "sudden unexpected and loud explosions."
“Due to an event at Camp Pendleton today, October 18th, Interstate 5 will be closed from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.”
This closure comes despite the Marine Corps' initial statement that no freeway closure would be necessary.
