La-Di-Da Love: Diane Keaton's First Boyfriend Remembers Their New York Romance

Actor Robert Lesser recounts meeting Diane Keaton at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City when she was 19.

While driving to Los Angeles, Lesser received a call from his wife, Annie, with the sad news of Diane Keaton's passing at 79.

Lesser and Keaton met in 1965 as first-year acting students at the Neighborhood Playhouse, where Keaton, then known as Diane Hall, was new to New York City.

She was an exotic creature from Orange County, Calif., who was still Diane Hall.

At the time, Keaton was staying at a women's boarding house called The Rehearsal Club, while Lesser had his first New York apartment.
