A team of researchers has identified four potential antiviral drug candidates for COVID-19 after screening over 250,000 drugs and natural compounds.
The goal of the screening was to find which compounds stop viral replication the most, as there are currently only three antivirals authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating COVID-19.
According to the researchers, if the SARS-CoV-2 virus develops resistance to any of the authorized antivirals, treatment options will be severely limited.
The team's search identified four potential candidates for COVID-19 treatment, as reported in ACS Infect.
