Pausing midrun can lower your heart rate, prevent injury, and make running more enjoyable. They’re a great reset that can split long days right in half.
I’ll put in a podcast, head out the door, and forget all my responsibilities for a half-hour or so. One particular lunch run even taught me a lesson all runners should take to heart:
Sometimes stopping makes the run better.
In late May, I went out for a jog right around noon. On my out-and-back route, I pass over a swampy area between two rolling hills that basically acts as a drainage point for the surrounding cornfields.
I was cruising along when I spotted a turtle inching across the asphalt. I came to a complete stop, waved a passing car around the slow-moving reptile, and took a few photos of my acquaintance.
I stood there and watched it for a minute or two before I scooped it up and safely moved it to the other side of the road where it was headed.
