Montreal bus drivers and metro operators are warning of a potential strike, as indicated by billboards posted in Montreal this week.
The CUPE Local 1983 union, representing 4,500 STM workers, has posted billboards reading:
Buses and metros soon to strike. Thank you, STM.
The union has not issued a strike notice or set dates, and talks with the STM are ongoing. In May, the union voted 99% in favour of pressure tactics, including a possible unlimited general strike.
The STM's collective agreement with CUPE Local 1983 members expired in January. The union has not triggered a strike in 38 years.
Author's summary: Montreal transit workers may strike soon.
