Long-Acting Diquafosol Sodium Drop Improves Tear Volume, Meniscus Height

Diquafosol sodium long-acting can substantially improve multiple dry eye disease metrics at various timepoints.

Topical diquafosol sodium long-acting (DQL) can substantially increase tear meniscus height (TMH), as well as noninvasive tear film break-up time (TBUT) at two timepoints — soon after the first application, and through 2 hours afterwards.

Diquafosol sodium long-acting also lowers needed doses from 6 to 3 times daily, and so may encourage patients to stick with a routine, a study published in Eye & Contact Lens shows.

Investigators in Japan randomly assigned a cohort of 60 individuals, 60 healthy eyes to one of 4 eyedrop groups.

Noninvasive keratography (NIK) avoided too much fluorescein staining that may arise with repeat testing.

Author summary: Diquafosol sodium improves dry eye disease metrics.
