Joe Keery, the star of "Stranger Things," recently officiated a wedding in California while dressed as his character Steve Harrington. This unusual choice was because the wedding was Halloween-themed, and all guests were in costumes. Keery wore the iconic Scoops Ahoy sailor outfit from the show's third season, which his friend and fellow band member got married in Simi Valley, California. The bride, Veronica Capaldi, suggested he go as Steve for the costume wedding, making it a fun and fitting tribute rather than an impromptu or random decision.
Keery confirmed he wore the original Scoops Ahoy costume, lent to him by Amy Parris, the costume designer for "Stranger Things." He noted this was the outfit he wore throughout nearly the entire third season, where Steve works at the ice cream shop in the mall. Despite attempts to change elements of the costume for practicality, the Duffer Brothers insisted the whole look should be kept as it is a defining style for the character.
The wedding was clearly planned as a costume party, with many guests dressed up as well — not just Joe Keery. He shared photos showing the party atmosphere and fellow musician friends in costume, which included a variety of playful outfits. This emphasized the communal and celebratory spirit of the event, clarifying that Keery's Steve Harrington attendance was an affectionate nod within a themed celebration.
Keery reflected on how wearing the costume for a year during filming was a memorable experience and now it took on a different feel at the wedding with minor fit differences. Steve Harrington remains a popular and recognizable character, with his Scoops Ahoy look symbolizing both quirky charm and 1980s nostalgia, fitting well for a Halloween celebration among friends.
“Amy Parris, who creates the costumes for the series, lent me the outfit,” Keery shared on The Tonight Show. “It’s a costume wedding. It’s Halloween. You should go as [Steve].”
“These are my friends! There were plenty of people in costumes!” he remarked while showing the wedding photos.
“I thought, you know, we’re in action, fighting Russians, in an underground lair… shouldn’t I take off the blouse part? Maybe lose the handkerchief? The Duffer Brothers insisted, no no, — it’s a look.”
Joe Keery also revealed he reprised the Steve Harrington role in the final season of "Stranger Things," which is releasing in installments through the holiday season.
