South African coach Darryl Fisher recognizes that the Cook Islands will be clear favourites in Sunday’s IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026 qualifier at CommBank Stadium, yet he remains optimistic about the talent on his own team.
"The squad is looking pretty good, they have been training really well and they are in good shape," Fisher said. "We are well aware of the level of opposition we are up against, but it is an opportunity for our players to play guys at that level. If they put their best foot forward and play to their capabilities, they will give themselves a chance. I certainly can’t ask any more of them in terms of their preparation and effort to get ready for the game. I am impressed by how they are looking and if they can manage the physical pressure."
Cook Islands and South Africa will compete for the final spot in the upcoming World Cup to be held in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The Cook Islands squad boasts NRL and Super League stars such as KL Iro, Brendan Piakura, and Marata Niukore. The South African Rhinos feature players from state competitions in NSW, Queensland, and Western Australia, including Niel Beukes, a former Storm and Cowboys triallist making his international debut after playing Super Rugby with the Pretoria-based Blue Bulls.
Summary: The clash between Cook Islands and South Africa highlights contrasting lineups, with the Rhinos hopeful despite facing a much stronger, star-studded opponent.
