The Edmonton Oilers seem to have found a potential internal answer to their goaltending issues. Samuel Jonsson, drafted by the Oilers in the fifth round of 2022, started drawing significant attention during the 2024–25 season.
While playing for Bofors IK in Sweden’s second-tier league, HockeyAllsvenskan, Jonsson posted impressive numbers with a 1.88 goals-against average (GAA) and a .922 save percentage in 24 games. His efforts earned recognition from the Oilers’ management, resulting in a three-year entry-level contract signed in April.
Despite the team adding two veteran goalies, Matt Tomkins and Connor Ingram, Jonsson began the 2025–26 season with the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL. His outstanding performances early in the season have already sparked speculation about a call-up to the Bakersfield Condors.
“At just 21 years old, expecting Jonsson to take on a major role with the Oilers this season would be premature.”
Nevertheless, his recent stretch of hot performances combined with last season’s success points to a bright future as a potential NHL-caliber goaltender.
Samuel Jonsson’s rapid rise from Sweden’s second league to ECHL dominance signals that Edmonton may have a future NHL star in the making.
