Bryant Brown, a former Boundary County jail employee, faces a charge of aggravated battery for allegedly assaulting an inmate in January 2023. Charges were filed only in September 2023.
A preliminary hearing for Brown, 37, is scheduled for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse. Two earlier hearings were canceled without explanation. Brown posted a $50,000 bond and has not yet entered a plea.
On January 3, 2023, an inmate wanted on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County was arrested by Bonners Ferry Police. The inmate was reportedly intoxicated, verbally abusive, and uncooperative with jail staff.
According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff's Detective Brandon Blackmore, after a heated verbal exchange, Brown allegedly shoved the inmate against a glass window in his holding cell and punched him, causing the inmate's head to hit a brick wall.
According to Blackmore's testimony, "Brown then grabbed the man’s throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall."
The inmate reportedly tried to block the blows by grabbing Brown's arms but did not resist otherwise.
The Herald does not disclose the names of victims in criminal cases.
