Anemone, the first movie in eight years by three-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis, has finally arrived in cinemas after much anticipation.
The film is co-written by Daniel Day-Lewis, his son, and director Ronan Day-Lewis. The story centers around Jem Stoker, played by Sean Bean (known for Game of Thrones), who begins the film praying for strength before saying goodbye to his wife, Nessa, portrayed by Oscar-nominee Samantha Morton (In America), and rushing away on his motorbike.
Jem's journey takes him to an isolated shack deep in the Yorkshire woods, where his older, reclusive brother Ray (Daniel Day-Lewis) lives. The brothers have not seen each other in 20 years, and their reunion is cold and silent. Throughout the film’s two-hour runtime, the reasons behind Jem’s visit and Ray’s self-imposed isolation gradually unfold.
Anemone is a family drama laced with thriller and horror elements. It skillfully maintains a strong tonal control from start to finish. The film's deliberate pacing allows for a careful reveal of character motivations and plot.
"Anemone has such a strong command of tone... creating a thick air of mystery, dread and suspense."
This film is a slowly-burning, richly textured exploration of family, isolation, and secrets that demands attention and patience.
