SC Issues Notice To Mohammed Shami Over His Estranged Wife Hasin Jahan’s Alimony Plea

Supreme Court Issues Notice to Mohammed Shami Over Alimony Case

The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government after his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, filed a petition seeking an increase in her monthly alimony.

Background of the Case

Hasin Jahan approached the Supreme Court to challenge a Calcutta High Court order granting her 1.5 lakh rupees per month for personal maintenance and 2.5 lakh rupees for their daughter’s care. She argued that the amount was insufficient to cover their living expenses.

Court Proceedings

During the hearing, the bench reportedly commented that the interim maintenance granted was “quite handsome.” According to ANI, the Supreme Court directed both parties to file their replies within four weeks, after which the case will return for further hearing.

Ongoing Legal Dispute

This development continues the legal conflict between Shami and Jahan, which began in 2018 when she accused him of domestic abuse and harassment, leading to a criminal case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cleared Shami of separate match-fixing allegations, personal disputes between the couple have continued. The cricketer has largely avoided public statements about the matter.

When asked in a past interview whether he regretted marrying Hasin Jahan, Shami replied, “Leave that.”

Author’s Summary

The Supreme Court’s notice to Shami and the Bengal government signals a new stage in a protracted legal dispute over alimony and personal allegations that began in 2018.
