The relationship between the Toronto Maple Leafs and forward David Kampf has noticeably worsened over the past year, reaching a breaking point this week. Kampf did not secure a spot on the Maple Leafs’ main roster after training camp, marking the first time he has missed an NHL opening night lineup since the 2017–18 season.
According to league sources, Kampf has been suspended without pay by the Maple Leafs for leaving their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Because of this suspension, the team is not currently carrying his $1.25 million minor-league cap charge.
The Leafs stated that the situation is part of the process toward an amicable resolution and expect the matter to be resolved soon, as Kampf is anticipated to report back.
Tensions between the Maple Leafs and David Kampf have led to a suspension after he left the AHL team, though both sides aim to settle the dispute quickly.
