Chicago weather: Models hint at possible snowfall this weekend

Chicago Weather Forecast: Possible Snowfall This Weekend

Mild fall weather will continue through Friday before a weather system may bring the season’s first mix of rain and snow to the Chicago area this weekend. FOX 32's Mike Caplan provides the weather outlook.

Short-Term Outlook

Today, despite a passing cold front, expect plenty of sunshine along with windy conditions. High temperatures will range from the low to mid-50s in northern counties to the low 60s in southern counties. Tonight will be mostly clear and chilly, with lows in the 30s.

Tomorrow will begin with a few clouds but become cloudier late in the afternoon. Highs are expected to reach the upper 50s. After midnight, a chance of light rain showers will cross the area, though significant rainfall is not expected.

On Friday, showers should end by daybreak, followed by sunshine and mild temperatures with highs in the low to mid-60s.

Weekend Weather

Saturday will start partly sunny with some clouds, and late-day rain is forecasted. Computer models increasingly suggest that cold air arriving Saturday night could cause some rain to transition to snow. However, accumulation looks unlikely at this time.

Both the US and European models are showing this scenario to at least some extent.

Discussion will continue in the coming days about the exact precipitation types Saturday night through Monday morning.

Summary

This weekend’s system may bring the first mix of rain and snow to Chicago, but significant snow accumulation appears unlikely based on current models.

Author’s note: Chicago faces a mild end to the week with growing chances of a rain-snow mix this weekend, though substantial snow is not expected.
