Senior Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson has voiced doubts about Sussan Ley's leadership amid growing internal debate within the Coalition over the net zero policy.
Senator Henderson stated she "cannot support the way things are" as the Liberal Party prepares for a partyroom meeting on net zero, scheduled for Sunday, November 16. This meeting will determine the Coalition's final stance on the policy.
The Liberal Party has been pressured recently to clarify its position on net zero, especially following the Nationals’ decision to abandon the policy. Senator Henderson, who opposes the net zero initiative, highlighted that the party is facing challenges:
Discussing Ms. Ley’s current standing as party leader, Senator Henderson remarked:
"I do have to say, really honestly, I do think Sussan is losing support, but I do believe in miracles, we can turn things around."
She emphasized her inability to endorse the current direction of the party at this moment.
Senator Henderson’s concerns signal significant tensions within the Liberal Party regarding leadership and policy direction as it approaches a critical decision on net zero.
Author’s note: Internal divisions and declining support are putting pressure on Sussan Ley’s leadership amid the Coalition’s net zero policy debate.
