The San Antonio Spurs have started the season strong, but one key player’s impact remains underappreciated: forward Julian Champagnie. Following an impressive preseason where he hit 19 of 30 three-point attempts, Champagnie has proven to be one of the NBA's best value contracts.
Standing 6-foot-8, his blend of size and sharpshooting ability has made him an important role player. Defensively, he is not a lockdown defender but is reliable and far from a liability. His length and agility enable him to guard his position effectively, and he ranks third on the team with 6.4 rebounds per game, an above-average total for his position.
The Spurs acquired Champagnie as a free agent midway through the 2022–23 season and later re-signed him to a four-year, $12 million deal. Currently in the final guaranteed year of this contract, the Spurs face a critical choice regarding his future.
“If he were to hit unrestricted free agency, then he could earn at least four times what he is making now, and the Spurs shouldn't let it get to that point.”
Considering his contributions and potential, the Spurs should strongly consider extending his contract. A proposal for a four-year, $40 million extension could secure Champagnie’s role on the team through the 2029–30 season.
Retaining Champagnie with a timely contract extension aligns with the Spurs' project for sustained success and roster stability.
