Rory McIlroy will attend Spoty awards this year and claims: ‘If I don’t win now, I never will’

Rory McIlroy to Attend Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Masters champion Rory McIlroy will attend the upcoming Sports Personality of the Year ceremony for the first time in over ten years. The golfer hopes his appearance will help break the 36-year streak of golf missing out on the BBC honor.

McIlroy, who finished second to Lewis Hamilton in 2014 despite capturing consecutive major titles, said he was convinced that participating could benefit the sport’s image in the UK.

“Yeah, the plan is to go,” McIlroy told Telegraph Sport at Yas Links on Wednesday. “I have more chance of winning if I’m actually there and I recognise that with the audience the show attracts it could only be a good thing for the game. I suppose if I don’t win it this time, I never will.”

The 36-year-old, now part of an elite group of players who have achieved the career grand slam following his Masters victory in April, acknowledged he is not the favourite this year. Still, his accomplishment of completing all four major titles has elevated his place in golfing history.

Bookmakers currently list footballer Chloe Kelly, who shone in England Women’s European Championship triumph last summer, as the prospective winner.
