American Father and Son Die After Wasp Attack in Laos

Dan Owen and his teenage son Cooper tragically lost their lives after a swarm of wasps attacked them at Green Jungle Park in Laos. The incident occurred on October 15 while they were descending from a tree at the end of a zip line.

Owen, who served as the director of an international school in Vietnam, and his son were vacationing near Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its natural beauty. The pair were stung over 100 times during the attack.

They were first taken to a nearby clinic and later transferred to Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital in critical condition, according to emergency room physician Jorvue Yianouchongteng.

“The son was unconscious and passed away after half an hour, while the father was conscious and passed away about three hours later,” said Yianouchongteng. “We tried our best to save them but we couldn’t.”

The doctor explained that both victims suffered severe anaphylactic shock as a result of the multiple stings, but the exact cause of death is still under medical evaluation.
