An urgent recall has been announced for three tomato-based pasta sauces that may pose a serious health threat due to possible contamination with Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This organism can cause botulism, a potentially fatal type of food poisoning.
First and Last Bakery, LLC, has recalled the following 26-ounce jars:
The sauces were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and possibly other retailers between September 22 and September 26, 2025. All affected jars carry a use-by date of September 26.
"The affected products were produced without an approved schedule, meaning the production process was not properly reviewed to prevent the formation of this dangerous bacterium," stated the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as reported by the Independent.
Although no cases of illness have been reported, health officials urge customers who purchased these sauces to return them to the store for a full refund rather than risk consumption.
Botulism symptoms can appear within hours to days and may include blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, and respiratory paralysis. Immediate medical attention is crucial if symptoms occur after consuming a potentially affected product.
The recall of several First and Last Bakery sauces underscores the critical importance of safe food processing, after concerns that contamination with Clostridium botulinum could cause life-threatening poisoning.
