Almost 600 customers in the Moss Park area have been without electricity since 8:11 a.m. Wednesday. Toronto Hydro reports that power is expected to be restored by 3 p.m. Thursday, nearly 30 hours after the outage began.
The outage covers the area from Queen Street E. and Jarvis Street to Parliament Street and Front Street E. Initially, more than 1,000 customers were affected, with an early restoration estimate set for 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Toronto Hydro identified the cause as a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site, which damaged Hydro’s infrastructure.
“The work that caused the dig-in is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but resulted in damage to our infrastructure. Repairing this damage required our crews to excavate 14 feet underground in order to access the impacted area,” said spokesperson Brie Davis.
Crews worked through the night, but the complexity of the repairs extended the restoration timeline.
“We understand that being without power for an extended period is disruptive to daily life. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we complete these critical repairs safely,” Davis added.
