The Arctic grayling, which had been wiped out over a century ago, have been reintroduced to the Boardman-Ottaway River.
After years of planning and months of careful nurturing, 557 silvery-blue speckled fish were released into the river in late October.
These fish, along with hundreds of others released in August, will be monitored to see if they can survive and return to the river to spawn, a process that will take at least three years.
This effort is part of a larger restoration project led by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians to revive the Boardman-Ottaway River.
