French Lesbian Literature Takes Center Stage
A new literary prize, the Prix Gouincourt, is set to be awarded for the first time, highlighting the growing prominence of lesbian literature in France.
The prize is the brainchild of 34-year-old Lauriane Nicol, who founded the media outlet Lesbien Raisonnable in 2017, which includes a newsletter, website, and Instagram account with over 38,000 followers.
The Prix Gouincourt is an ironic nod to the prestigious Prix Goncourt, with "gouine" being a slang term for lesbian.
A jury of 10 artists and book industry professionals will choose the winning "French lesbian novel", which will be announced on November 7, just three days after the Prix Goncourt is awarded.
The creation of the Prix Gouincourt aims to shine a spotlight on a genre that is becoming increasingly prominent in French literature.
