Ethics rules didn't require Sheffield to disclose relationship

Ethics Rules and City Council

City Council President Mary Sheffield sought guidance from the city's ethics board before voting on contracts involving a demolition contractor she had a personal relationship with.

According to Conrad Mallett, corporation counsel for the city, an executive order prohibiting employees from having relationships with people involved in contracts they oversee does not apply to council members.

The ethics board said she had no conflict of interest in the matter.

Author's summary: Ethics rules did not require disclosure of Sheffield's relationship.
