A visit to the BCMA to see the Gordon Parks exhibit sparked a reflection on the significance of general stores in Maine.

The exhibit featured a set of photographs centered on a quaint general store, which drew the author's attention and led to thoughts about the role of such stores in shaping community.

Community isn’t necessarily about town meetings or Facebook groups but is derived from the places that sell us coffee, eggs and a sense of belonging.

The author recalls their first experience at a general store, Hope General Store, where they bought greasy pizza, delicious brownies, and unbeatable iced tea, and still buys Little Lad's popcorn to this day.
