Sonny Jim's Legacy: A Fight for Justice

After 16 years of delays, the fight for Sonny Jim becomes a battle against the system.

Sonny Jim, a rodeo powerhouse and former Harlem Globetrotters road warrior, was known for his fiery personality and cigar-chewing competitions. He also played as a backup strummer for Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

“Everyone knew him,” said his daughter, Sonlatsa “Sunshine” Jim. “They’d say, ‘Sonny Jim!’ and the crowd would just scream for him. He was known all around – not just here, but across Indian Country.”

Sixteen years after his brutal murder in Grants, New Mexico, Sunshine continues to fight for justice, with her battle growing beyond her father's case.

Author's summary: Sonny Jim's daughter seeks justice 16 years after his murder.
