Lawmakers face conflicting calls to loosen, tighten regulation of hemp and marijuana

Lawmakers Face Conflicting Calls on Hemp and Marijuana Regulation

Lawmakers in Atlanta are considering changes to the regulation of hemp and marijuana, with some calling for looser rules and others for tighter controls.

Jennifer Conforti, the mother of a 15-year-old girl with profound autism, testified before lawmakers about her experiences with medical cannabis. Conforti's daughter, Abby, was prescribed powerful drugs at the age of 3 to help manage her condition, but they were ineffective. Conforti decided to break the law and source marijuana, which she then broke down into a concentrate in her kitchen.

Abby was taking benzodiazepines to help with her reactions, such as biting the skin off her arm, but the drugs were not helping.

A decade ago, lawmakers passed a medical cannabis law allowing patients on a state registry to obtain low-THC oil. While this helped Conforti's daughter, she testified that patients need access to products with higher levels of THC and in more forms, such as vape products or the flower from the plant itself.
