Rise in Poison Control Calls from Kratom Use in PA

Poison control centers in Pennsylvania are experiencing an increase in calls related to overdose-like symptoms from kratom and 7-OH, a synthetic form of kratom.

Kratom, an herbal substance from a Southeast Asian tree, contains compounds like mitragynine and 7-OH, which have stimulant and sedative effects. It is available in various forms, including powder, pill, and liquid, and can only be purchased by those 21 or older.

“7-OH is more potent than products that contain mitragynine in general, so it makes sense as we’re seeing more of these products in the area; we’re getting more calls about it,”

According to the Health Department, there were 38 unintentional and undetermined drug overdose deaths in 2024 where kratom/7-OH was a contributing factor. The poison center has received several calls about 7-OH since August, indicating a growing concern.
