New Film Explores History and Conservation at Vermejo Reserve

A new documentary film, "Preserved," delves into the history and conservation efforts at Ted Turner's Vermejo Reserve, located west of Raton, New Mexico.

The Vermejo Reserve, spanning nearly 560,000 acres in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado, encompasses wilderness, ranchland, and former coal mines. It extends over the state line into Colorado, featuring diverse ecosystems.

"What's really unique is how many ecosystems it crosses,"

said Lance Bernal, the reserve's natural resources manager, in the film. The reserve's elevation ranges from 6,000 feet in the short grass prairie to above 13,000 feet in alpine areas.

Ted Turner purchased the Vermejo Reserve in 1996, initiating efforts to restore and conserve its ecosystems.
