Ford, Hopson outline top 2026 priorities for Mississippi

Mississippi's 2026 Legislative Priorities

Mississippi lawmakers outlined the state's top legislative priorities for 2026, including education, government efficiency, and fiscal stewardship, during a policy panel hosted by the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce.

Kevin Ford and Hopson, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, discussed areas of focus for the next legislative session, such as teacher pay, education standards, public employee retirement, and tax reform.

“When I first got elected, we were 49th or 50th in the country in educational attainment,” Hopson said. “We are now 16th in the country. In fourth grade reading, we’re ninth in the nation.

Hopson noted that while Mississippi's rapid rise in educational rankings is encouraging, work remains to sustain that progress.
