In 2023, New York City became the first city in the US to introduce a minimum wage rate for app-based restaurant delivery drivers, with other progressive cities following suit. However, this has resulted in issues such as increased delivery costs and a decline in the number of drivers.
The New York City Council has passed legislation aimed at protecting grocery delivery drivers, including a requirement for delivery apps to offer a 10-percent tipping option at the time of order, and mandating that platforms pay drivers within seven days of the end of a pay period.
