New Monument to Honour Navan's Miners
A call has been made by the Meath Council of Trade Unions for a new sculpture to honour Navan's miners, to be located near the Andy Connolly Roundabout.
The existing sculpture, 'On the Great Wide Open', pays tribute to those who dedicated their lives to the mining industry in Navan.
The current monument does not reflect the image of a current day miner.
According to John Regan, chairman of Meath Council of Trade Unions, this is a concern for miners.
- The sculpture was previously located at the former roundabout on the Kells Road.
- It was put in storage in January when work began to replace the roundabout with a signalised junction.
Council officials are expected to discuss the future location of the sculpture at a Navan Municipal Council meeting.
