Wriggling, Wriggling: Ruthless Cecil Rhodes

Author: Michael Ledger-Lomas.

Cecil Rhodes viewed the 'native question' differently from imperial officials and missionaries.

A disturbing frontispiece in Olive Schreiner's novel Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland (1897) shows three dead African men hanging from a tree.

Englishmen in shirtsleeves and broad-brimmed hats, their grins set off by heavy moustaches, enjoying the sport.

The photograph was found by Samuel Cronwright, Schreiner's husband, in a barber shop window in Kimberley, a diamond-mining town.

The image was taken during the Ndebele rebellion against the British South Africa Company in Southern Rhodesia.

Author's summary: Cecil Rhodes' ruthless view on native question.
