The closure of the Cheyenne Family YMCA has sparked discussions about the need for a public rec center to support local youth and community health efforts.
The Cheyenne Family YMCA, a part of the community since the 1950s, closed "indefinitely" last month due to financial difficulties. According to CEO Chris Coker, the facility required around 1,800 memberships to remain viable, but only had around 800 members at the time of closure.
The YMCA offered various services, including afterschool daycare and youth athletic programs, making its closure a significant loss for the community.
CEO Chris Coker said ideally the Y should have about 2,500 memberships, but it could have stayed open with around 1,800.
The closure has renewed discussions about the need for a public rec center to fill the gap left by the YMCA.
