On a Monday night, the lights of Midnight Coffee in downtown Iowa City invited people to engage in poetry.
The featured poet was Ashley Crooks-Allen, known as Lyrical Ley, who comes from a background of immigrant parents who faced segregation.
Crooks-Allen has a master's degree from the University of Georgia and a focus on social movements and Black immigrant identity.
