Donald Trump has been trying to fire Lisa Cook, a renowned economist and member of the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors, over claims of mortgage fraud.
Despite no charges being filed, the administration claims Cook committed "financial misfeasance", which they frame as "potentially criminal" and termination-worthy.
However, the allegations against Cook appear to be a clerical error, according to additional loan documents.
The issue was first raised by Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), who has not filed his own disclosure form with the SEC as required as chairman of the board of Fannie Mae.
