Shift in Alaska's Workforce: Seniors and Teens on the Rise

As Alaska's population of working-age adults declines, other demographic groups are becoming larger segments of the labor force, including seniors and teenagers.

According to economists, residents 65 and older made up 6.2% of the Alaska worker population in 2023, a significant increase from 1.8% in 2003, as reported by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

In contrast, teenagers aged 14 to 17 years old comprised 4.4% of Alaska's resident workers in 2003, but this percentage dropped over the years, reflecting national trends, and reached a low of 2%.
