Canada’s Rachel Homan secured her 20th Grand Slam of Curling title by defeating Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 7-4 in the final of the KIOTI GSOC Tahoe on Sunday.
This victory marked the third consecutive Grand Slam final between the world’s top two ranked teams, with Homan’s team winning all three meetings.
Homan’s Ottawa-based team—consisting of third Tracy Fleury, second Emma Miskew, and lead Sarah Wilkes—posted a flawless 7-0 record throughout the tournament, earning $42,000 in prize money.
“Yeah, it's an unbelievable feeling, especially winning a game that was a battle out there for both teams,” Homan said. “It's just really fun to play such an amazing team, and being able to pull out the win is an awesome feeling.”
Switzerland’s team, including fourth Alina Pätz, second Carole Howald, and lead Selina Witschonke, suffered their only loss of the event in the final, taking home $34,000. Tirinzoni’s squad holds an 18-3 Grand Slam record this season, with all losses coming against Homan.
The Swiss team began the game with the hammer, aiming to avoid the costly error that led to a four-point steal for Homan in the previous month’s CO-OP Tour Challenge.
Author’s summary: Rachel Homan extended her Grand Slam of Curling record with a perfect tournament run, continuing her streak of victories over top-ranked Silvana Tirinzoni’s team.
