Pete Davidson always has a reliable friend in Eddie Murphy. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 31-year-old comedian and actor expressed deep admiration for Murphy, 64, highlighting their unique bond and shared experiences.
Davidson recalls being a fan of Eddie Murphy from a very young age. "I've been a fan of Eddie Murphy since I was five, six, when my mom bought me Delirious from FYE," he shared, describing how a simple childhood mistake led him to discover a love for stand-up comedy.
Both comedians have strong ties to the iconic show Saturday Night Live (SNL), which helped launch their careers. Davidson joined SNL at age 20 and remained part of the cast from 2014 to 2022. Murphy started at 19, performing from 1980 to 1984.
Davidson emphasizes their similarities, saying:
“And we have a lot of similarities in our personal lives as well. We both lost our dads when we were young… and that was one of the reasons we got into comedy.”
Having experienced similar life challenges, Davidson considers himself fortunate to receive advice from Murphy, someone who truly understands his journey and struggles.
Overall, their shared history and mutual understanding form the foundation of a meaningful mentor-mentee relationship.
