Wendy’s has announced it will close approximately 300 stores across the United States in the near future. This is in addition to an earlier plan to shut down 150 locations towards the end of 2024.
Interim CEO Ken Cook confirmed the store closures during a quarterly earnings call on November 7. He explained the company aims to eliminate underperforming restaurants that negatively impact the brand and franchisee profitability.
"When we look at the system today, we have some restaurants that do not elevate the brand and are a drag from a franchisee financial performance perspective," Cook said. "The goal is to address and fix those restaurants."
The closures are expected to begin later this year, but specific locations affected have not been disclosed.
New Jersey hosts 145 Wendy’s restaurants, including many in South Jersey. While it is unclear which stores will close, the list of targeted locations may include some from this state.
Customers can use Wendy’s online restaurant locator to find the nearest open location.
Finance resource Investing.com reported that over 350 Wendy’s locations will close nationwide when combining both rounds of shutdowns.
The news was reported by Williams, a Philadelphia-based journalist covering trending topics in the Mid-Atlantic region.
