A familiar Stephen King setting reappears as new connections unfold in the series. Warning: spoilers ahead for episodes 1 and 2 of IT: Welcome to Derry.
The trailer for episode 3 reveals a strong link to one of Stephen King’s favorite adaptations. Set 27 years before the first IT movie, the prequel uncovers the early mysteries of Derry. It features Dick Halloran, played by Chris Chalk — a character known from The Shining — and numerous Easter eggs referencing King’s wider universe.
In a pivotal moment, Hank Grogan (Stephen Rider) is questioned after his arrest and hears a chilling line:
“Do you know what they do to kiddy-killers in Shawshank?”
This directly refers to Shawshank Prison from King’s 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, later turned into an acclaimed film. The trailer thus ties Derry’s grim tale to another iconic King world.
Framed for the murders seen in episode 1, Hank becomes the central victim of false accusations. Lilly Bainbridge (Clara Stack) teams up with Ronnie Grogan (Amanda Christine) to prove Hank’s innocence. They enlist the aid of Will Hanlon (Blake Cameron James), whose scientific knowledge might offer the breakthrough they need.
Meanwhile, Halloran is airlifted to assist the military in locating a powerful weapon. During this mission, he is plagued by haunting visions — a carnival barker repeating the eerie phrase:
“Step right up.”
This refrain grows more menacing throughout the trailer, deepening the sense of horror and linking to Derry’s dark legacy.
The episode 3 trailer binds Derry’s chilling prequel to the broader Stephen King universe, merging new secrets with familiar horror landmarks.
