‘It is time to step away’: Popular Salem restaurant closing after 7 years

A well-known restaurant in downtown Salem, The Derby Restaurant & Bar, announced that it will close its doors after seven years of operation. The location is being transferred to new ownership, with closure planned by Monday, December 1.

“After almost 7 years and enough memories to last a lifetime, it is time to step away. We want to send out a special thank you to all of those that have supported us throughout our journey and make sure we thank ALL of the stellar members of our team for all they have done to make The Derby a success.”

The message, posted on Facebook, reflected deep gratitude to staff and patrons alike. The owners expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed to the restaurant’s success and spoke warmly of the friendships formed through the years.

“It goes without saying that over the years, we have worked with some truly remarkable people that we consider friends and family and will always cherish the relationships The Derby has injected into our lives. Thank you for making the last 7 years so special!”

Before closing, The Derby plans to host a series of farewell events to celebrate and thank the community for its continued support. The restaurant is also assisting employees in finding new jobs.

Opened in 2019, The Derby faced major challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it had to temporarily scale back operations. With community backing, it later revived and became known for its lively atmosphere, drag brunches, Kentucky Derby viewing parties, and Sunday football gatherings.
