Daniel Day-Lewis expressed that Brian Cox drew him into an unnecessary debate over Method acting. The actor shared these thoughts in a conversation with the U.K.'s Big Issue while promoting his new film Anemone.
"Listen, I worked with Brian Cox once and got somehow drawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently," Day-Lewis said.
According to Day-Lewis, Cox has been vocal about Method acting and its influence on their mutual acquaintance, Succession star Jeremy Strong. Cox previously told Variety that Strong became interested in Method acting after working with Day-Lewis.
"Brian is a very fine actor who’s done extraordinary work. As a result, he’s been given a soapbox… which he shows no sign of climbing down from. Any time he wants to talk about it, I’m easy to find," Day-Lewis remarked.
The two actors collaborated on the 1997 film The Boxer. Cox, who is 79, earlier suggested that Day-Lewis’ immersive process contributed to his long hiatus from acting and influenced Strong, who once served as Day-Lewis’ assistant.
"Of course, Jeremy was Dan Day-Lewis’ assistant. So he’s learned all that stuff from Dan," Cox said.
Daniel Day-Lewis criticized Brian Cox for sparking a needless debate over Method acting, though he acknowledged Cox’s talent and said he remains open to discussion.
